It is a good thing to make brushing a part of your everyday routine. Brushing your teeth is the best way to protect yourself from gum disease and tooth decay. When actions become habits, however, we often complete them with little thought. This is why it’s a good idea to go over the basics of brushing every so often to make sure you’re still doing it correctly.

When you are brushing, try to avoid going side to side in wide strokes. This technique is widely practiced but is abrasive to your gums. It also makes it difficult to clean difficult to reach the corners of your mouth. Instead, you should hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and gently make small circular motions with the brush. Switching up where you start your brushing every so often is also a good idea just to help break up the routine.

You should often avoid toothpaste that contains whitening ingredients, as they can be abrasive to your teeth. It is recommended that you use a normal fluoride containing toothpaste. If you’d like to whiten your teeth, talk to Dr. Joshua Merrill about whitening products or toothpastes.

Make sure you are spending enough time brushing. Most people only spend less than a minute brushing. It’s recommended you spend at least two minutes brushing. It may seem like a long time, but it’s worth it to increase the productivity of your brushing.
