The winter season is also cold and flu season. Unfortunately, while you’re sick, your smile can be in danger if you don’t take good care of it. This is why our dentist, Dr. Joshua Merrill, recommends keeping your teeth and gums in mind while you’re making trips to the bathroom and laying in bed. To care for your smile while you’re sick, you should do the following things:
-Keep up on oral hygiene. This means you need to brush twice a day, floss once a day, and rinse daily. However, wait 30 minutes to brush after vomiting. You can rinse with water to avoid having a bad taste in the mouth while you wait. You should also replace your toothbrush after you have been sick. That way you don’t increase your chances of getting sick again.
-Only use sugar-free cough drops. This is recommended because cough drops that contain sugar can promote cavities. The sugar attacks and wears down the tooth enamel, creating problems.
-Make sure to stay hydrated. This is recommended because if you stay hydrated, you can get over your sickness faster and you can also prevent dry mouth. Dry mouth promotes cavities and bad breath. When it comes to choosing the beverage, water is always the best choice.
